Chapter 5: Who Uses Agile? – Everything you want to know about Agile

As identified in Chapter 1: What is Agile?, Agile methodologies are used by thousands of organizations worldwide – including Bankwest, Nokia Siemens Networks, Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft, SunCorp and BT – to produce high business-value outcomes in the delivery of their software solutions. Agile methodologies have been equally successful in private and public sector organizations of all sizes, particularly throughout the United States and Europe.

As an example, one of the most common Agile methodologies, Scrum, is used by a number of diverse organizations worldwide, including Adobe, Barclays Global Investors, the BBC’s New Media Division, BellSouth, Bose, Capital One®, GE, Google, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, SAP®, State Farm® and Yahoo!28

One of the co-founders of Yahoo! said, “Agile has been one of the most positive things to happen to the company”29.

Forrester’s September 2006 survey of technology decision makers30 identified that 17% of North American and European businesses use Agile methodologies, while another 29% are aware of them. A more recent survey undertaken by VersionOne31 indicates that organizations that use Agile in their software delivery are achieving increased productivity (74% of respondents), faster time to completion (66% of respondents) and improved ability to manage changes in requirements (87% of respondents).

This track record can give readers confidence in knowing that Agile methodologies are sustainable, proven approaches that are successfully used throughout the global marketplace.

28 The use of Scrum by these organizations is documented in numerous of sources, including corporate websites, industry publications (e.g. Microsoft Lauds Scrum Method for Software Projects, Taft DK (2005):, the work undertaken by industry experts such as Jeff Sutherland ( and case studies at industry events, such as The Growth of an Agile Coach Community at a Fortune 200 Company, Silva K & Doss C, AGILE 2007, Washington DC (August 13th –17th 2007):
